Accused Stalker Questioned: 'Yet What If I Could Be Madeleine?'

A woman accused with pursuing Kate McCann apparently left her a recorded message which questioned: "suppose I am Madeleine?"

The defendant, twenty-four, who witnesses stated has repeatedly declared she was the disappeared Madeleine McCann, and her co-defendant are facing charges indicted with stalking Kate and Gerry McCann between June 2022 and February the current year.

On Monday, Leicester Crown Court heard phone records and data recovered from phones recorded Ms Wandelt consistently demanding Madeleine's mother for a DNA test during the past two years.

Madeleine's vanishing in 2007 - when she was three years old during a family holiday in Portugal - is one of the most widely reported child disappearance cases and is still unsolved.

'I Do Not Need Money'

A separate recorded message, played in court, documented Ms Wandelt declaring: "I understand I'm overweight and plain like Madeleine used to be, but I know what I know."

While another instance of Ms Wandelt's monologues with Mrs McCann's voicemail said: "Imagine there is a tiny probability that I am she? Then what? Is that not crucial for you?"

"I do not need money, I maintain a life here in Poland, I just want to discover," she added.

The jury was advised that through electronic messages, mobile messages and phone calls, Ms Wandelt demanded a biological test, transmitted youth pictures to her phone in a bid to demonstrate a resemblance to Mrs McCann's missing daughter, and stated to have "memories" from a youth with the McCanns.

Robert Jones, an investigator with Leicestershire Police who compiled the data, told the court there "didn't appear to be any responses" from Mrs McCann.

Ms Wandelt additionally reached out to acquaintances of the McCanns, according to the phone records.

On that date, Mr McCann picked up a communication from Ms Wandelt to his wife's phone, stating she had "incorrect contact information."

That day Ms Wandelt recorded a voicemail on Mrs McCann's voicemail stating "I will continue and I plan to establish my position."

The court was informed the co-defendant established a connection through digital means with Ms Wandelt prior to joining her on a visit to the McCanns' residence in Leicestershire in that winter.

Phone records demonstrated Mrs Spragg had communicated using WhatsApp to Mrs McCann to say the media had characterized Ms Wandelt as "emotionally disturbed" but that she ought to be considered genuine in the time preceding the trip to Rothley, the county, in December 2024.

The court was told correspondence between the two accused, in that autumn, discussing trying to acquire Mrs McCann's biological evidence from her trash or from silverware at a restaurant.

"We must assert ourselves," Mrs Spragg told Ms Wandelt.

On the night of the trip to their house, Mrs Spragg transmitted a communication which expressed: "We find ourselves sitting near the McCanns' residence with our vehicle dark like investigators. I desired to achieve this with someone else I hadn't anticipated I would be engaged in this with the McCanns."
