From The Last of Us Co-Director Comes a New Game That Looks Very Different But Builds On Core Principles.

The acclaimed co-director responsible for The Last of Us has unveiled a new venture into game development. His new project, named Coven of the Chicken Foot, signifies the first release from his new team, Wildflower Interactive, a project that expands the ideas of the legacy he helped create centered around characters that learn and adapt.

An Unlikely Duo Embarks on a Unique Journey

Revealed at a recent industry showcase, Coven of the Chicken Foot functions as a narrative-driven exploration title. Players control an elderly witch, a protagonist who subverts traditional video game heroics. The foundational premise stemmed from a goal to rethink the typical hero’s journey.

"Imagine if you were without the sword or shield? Perhaps you are physically limited? What if you’re a little old lady?" asked the creative lead. "The concept seemed really fascinating to question the definition of a protagonist. Heroism involves fighting your way through obstacles, including traits like sacrifice, loyalty, determination, and persistence."

Evolving Past Companions: A New Level of AI Interaction

Although this project looks different at first glance, its core innovation evolves from the technology seen in The Last of Us. The entire project sprang from a key thought: "How could one create a companion character truly living and learning to the player?"

The companion creature that accompanies Gertie is far from a scripted follower. It is essentially a curious child that interacts in three key stages. Initially, it exhibits curiosity, potentially leading to playful hijinks. Then, it moves into a mimicry phase. In the end, it observes and assimilates grasping cause and effect.

  • To illustrate: Should the beast observe an object being placed, it learns the motion but not the reason.
  • Subsequently, it may begin grabbing nearby items and try slotting them, repeating what it saw.
  • True comprehension arrives when it stumbles upon solving an obstacle, teaching through experience.

Crafting Your Own Unique Story

This complex system is designed to create individualized narrative moments. Straley stresses that this project functions as a deliberate, discovery-focused adventure rather than a scripted, action-heavy path.

"Whenever I attempted traditional three-act structure for this project, the dynamic felt wrong," Straley explained. "The core appeal between these characters lies in the fact that each individual player experiences unique moments and stories unlike anyone else's."

This commitment to emergent, character-driven storytelling, the new title marks both a continuation and a drastic departure from the creator's legendary previous titles. The project remains being built for PC platforms.
