Harvard ex-president Summers Leaves from ChatGPT Maker's Leadership
One-time economic leader Larry Summers is leaving the directorate at the ChatGPT creator, just days after a collection of digital correspondence between him and notorious criminal the disgraced billionaire became public.
Summers remarked in a release that he was "appreciative for the chance to have participated, enthusiastic about the prospects of the company, and look forward following their advancement".
Summers, who once led the prestigious university, announced on recently that he would be withdrawing from public commitments due to his association with Epstein.
Message Exchange
The recently released emails demonstrated that the economist communicated with the financier until the eve of Epstein's 2019 arrest for suspected trafficking of young people.
In additional comments, the AI firm said it understood the economist's decision to step down.
"We value his many contributions and the insight he offered to the directors," OpenAI stated.
Congressional Action
This development arrives after both chambers of the US legislature agreed on this week to approve a bill that would require the Department of Justice to disclose its files on the case.
The legislation will then move to the administration of the White House for approval. He has stated he plans to sign the measure, after reversing his position on the subject following pressure from his followers.
Message Details
A batch of Epstein-connected messages made public by the legislative panel last week referenced several high-profile figures in the billionaire's previous network, without suggesting any illegal behavior by those individuals.
The emails indicated that the economist and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with Epstein often seeking to link Summers to notable world leaders.
Individual Statement
After the messages were made available with the general audience, Summers said he took "total ownership for my ill-advised judgment to continue communicating with the financier".
He continued that he hoped "to reestablish trust and repair connections with the individuals most important to me".
Previous Positions
The professor held high-level positions under Democratic administrations; serving as Treasury chief under the former president, and as head of the White House economic team under Barack Obama.
He presided over Harvard from the early 2000s and continues to be a faculty member there. When announcing his departure from public roles previously on this week, he indicated he would maintain his educational duties.
Other Impacts
Following his announcement on Monday, the Washington think tank, a left-leaning think tank in the capital where he was a senior fellow, confirmed that Summers was not connected with the group.
Summers joined the leadership of OpenAI, which makes ChatGPT, in the previous year - following a unsuccessful effort to replace its CEO the company leader.
