Italian Watchdog Slams Lift Ticket Cost Increases as Completely Unjustified
Italian consumer advocates are sounding the alarm over what they describe as entirely unreasonable cost hikes for ski passes this winter season, cautioning that alpine sports could become an exclusive privilege for the wealthy.
Substantial Price Increases Across Italy
Across the Alpine regions and breathtaking Dolomites in the northern areas to the slopes of central Italy, prices are poised to increase by up to 40% compared to prices from three years ago, according to recent analysis.
The popular Dolomiti Superski ticket, which grants access to all 12 resorts in the exclusive Dolomites, will now set visitors back €86 per day this season. In Roccaraso, a single-day lift ticket is expected to reach €60, after experiencing significant overcrowding during the previous winter.
Annual Ticket Prices and Supplementary Charges
Meanwhile, annual skiing tickets will range from €755 per adult in the Abruzzo region to upwards of €1,800 in the northern Aosta area.
The expense of hiring ski equipment has similarly risen, along with hotel accommodations and restaurant prices throughout alpine destinations.
Consumer Group President Cites Unjustified Increases
The consumer association president, leading the consumer protection group, emphasized that the cost rises—which operators blame on higher energy costs, resort maintenance, and demand for better equipment—were entirely unreasonable and not acceptable.
"Particularly since inflation in Italy are managed effectively and energy tariffs, which had increased expenses for mountain facility managers in 2022, have stabilized at previous levels," Melluso noted.
The president further stated that prices have climbed to points where budget-conscious visitors are being compelled to skip their traditional settimana bianca, or winter vacation, completely.
Tourism Decline and Broader Context
He noted a significant drop in mountain tourism during the 2024-2025 season, with 1 million fewer Italians hitting the slopes compared to the prior season due to rising costs.
Despite these increases, Italy remains a cheaper option for winter sports fans in western Europe compared to neighboring Switzerland, France, and Austrian locations.
International Event Background
The increasing worry over skiing costs comes as the nation gets ready to host the 2026 Winter Games between the first three weeks of February. Italy's foreign minister, the foreign affairs official, announced on Friday that Italy had submitted a proposal to the United Nations urging a "global truce" during the global competition.
"With Milan Cortina we must similarly convey a message of peace and dialogue... to halt conflicts during the Games," Tajani emphasized.
