The child of ex- South African Leader Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terrorism-related charges at the commencement of her trial in the port city of Durban.

Zuma-Sambudla, forty-three, is being tried over statements she made on online platforms four years ago during fatal protests in South Africa that followed the arrest of her dad.

A period of disorder in multiple regions of the country in mid-2021, including looting and intentional burning, left at least 300 killed and caused damage worth an projected $2.8bn (£2.2 billion).

Zuma-Sambudla has been alleged of fuelling this turmoil and faces allegations of encouragement to commit terror-related activities and public violence.

Background of the Case

The demonstrations were concentrated in the provinces of the Gauteng province and KwaZulu-Natal province and came after the previous president's detention for ignoring a court order to give evidence at an investigation into claims of graft while he was serving as president.

Ms Zuma-Sambudla has consistently rejected the charges against her, with her lawyer in the past calling the prosecution's evidence as unsubstantiated.

She has also consistently said the allegations against her were an effort to address political scores with her parent after he established his own political party and competed against the ruling party.

Backing and Legal Defense

This was reinforced by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which said the case was an "misuse of authority" and a "coordinated attempt" of "political and family-related persecution" against the former president and his relatives.

A few of backers from her party, the political party, gathered outside the judicial building, while her dad and other organization officials participated in the court sessions inside.

The defendant's representatives has maintained that the proof presented by the state is inadequate and lacks compelling proof for a criminal finding.

Main Aspects of the Legal Proceedings

  • Digital comments from the past form the foundation of the state's case
  • Deadly protests in July 2021 resulted in significant deaths and economic losses
  • The individual on trial faces multiple counts of incitement to public disorder
  • Judicial hearings are expected to continue for several court sessions

The court case continues as all parties present their cases before the court in what is expected to be a carefully observed judicial process with major politically charged implications for South Africa.
