The Eurovision Song Contest Used to Be a Campy Joy – However It Has Become a Calculated Tool to Whitewash War.
A new initialism came to light a couple of months into the military campaign against Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it stands for “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This acronym is found only in Gaza, according to health professionals including child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is uncommon for medical staff to attend to a child who has been bereaved of their whole family. However, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary about the widespread destruction in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been eradicated and the number of children who have lost limbs exceeds that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing ordinary about numerous doctors coming back from a landscape of rubble with testimonies of children being deliberately targeted.
A Hell on Earth Regardless of a Reported Truce
Conditions in Gaza persist as an utter catastrophe. Vital medicines and equipment are being blocked those in need, and groups like Amnesty International assert that atrocities are continuing. Authorities has denied these claims, consistent with how it refutes each claim it is charged with. Meanwhile, while young survivors are now suffering from the cold in makeshift tent camps, there is a piece of uplifting information: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from pursuing its declared purpose of “unity and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to offer a prestigious stage for Israel, even though several European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Because this, we are told, is what global togetherness resembles.
The contest, notably banned Russia from participating in 2022 due to the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza seems entirely distinct.
A Selective Vision
Forget the fact that Israel was accused of questionable voting tactics last year in what appears to have been an attempt to politicise Eurovision. Ignore the report that a young child was reportedly killed in Gaza recently. Neglect the data that attacks by settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have surged. Disregard the condition that foreign reporters are still prevented from independent reporting in Gaza. All of this, evidently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.
The Show Goes On Against a Backdrop of Staggering Tragedy
The contest marks seven decades next year – nearly twice the average life expectancy of an individual in Gaza at present. The broadcast will air, but it will likely never recapture the camp joy it historically embodied. A competition that was originally built on togetherness has transformed into a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
