The ice cream brand's Founding Partner States Parent Company Blocked Palestine-Themed Frozen Dessert Product
One of the original creators behind the famous frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has stated how corporate owner Unilever prevented the launch of a new pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, that co-founded the business with his partner, revealed that he plans to personally create the controversial flavor within an individual series showcasing issues the company was barred from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Conflict Involving Creators and Corporate Owner
This latest development escalates the continuing tension between the internationally recognized dessert company with its corporate parent, the UK-based packaged goods giant that acquired Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
Both founders have claimed how Unilever along with their ice cream division Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's from "honouring its social mission".
Watermelon Flavor becoming an Emblem for Support
Mr. Cohen revealed through social media that he's developing a new watermelon-based frozen dessert, asking for public suggestions regarding naming options plus potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder stated from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-based ice cream that calls for permanent peace for Palestinians and calls for addressing the harm that was done there.”
The watermelon has emerged as a symbol of solidarity with the Palestinian people due to its coloration, which closely resemble the colors in Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Activism plus Current Changes
Several years ago, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of its products in areas under Israeli control, resulting in the parent company transferring the Israeli operation over to a local licensee, thus allowing ongoing distribution in disputed territories.
The new dessert series will be developed under Ben's Best, the socially conscious ice cream brand that originally created in 2016 to support ex- political contender Senator Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Management Shifts plus Future Intentions
The founder stated how he will develop other frozen dessert varieties that address issues which Ben & Jerry's was silenced from addressing publicly due to corporate restrictions.
This development comes after co-founder Mr. Greenfield resigned from Ben & Jerry's recently, following decades with the organization, mentioning concerns regarding how its independence was compromised after corporate moves to restrict its social activism.
Previously, Mr. Cohen commented how "Jerry has strong compassion and this conflict with Unilever was breaking it."
"My heart compels me to continue to work within the organization to fight for its independence ensuring that it can achieve its ethical purpose, the values that established its foundation while upholding for over 40 years," he told journalists.
