The Reasons Prince Andrew Has Relinquished His Royal Titles – and What It Means for the Monarchy
Through a statement issued by Buckingham Palace, Prince Andrew has confirmed that he will be giving up his official honors, such as the Duke of York. Here are the details of what has been revealed – and what wasn't.
What Has Andrew Announced?
After previously stepped down as a active member of the monarchy in 2019, Andrew has now chosen to “take additional measures” and consent not to use the “honor or the honours which have been conferred upon” him.
But he also used the statement to emphatically rejecting – as he has always done – the allegations of misconduct made against him; even though after settling millions to settle the legal claim brought by Virginia Giuffre – an agreement in which he admitted no liability and firmly denied all allegations of improper conduct.
There has been persistent pressure on the monarchy regarding the allegations against Andrew – especially since his disastrous Newsnight interview with Emily Maitlis in 2019. He now claims that his actions are to protect his relatives from additional harm caused by media scrutiny.
Has the King Stripped Him of His Honors?
No. And although this could be dismissed as a mere formality, it is significant in multiple ways: first, it allows Andrew to openly state to have behaved with integrity in defence of the crown. As stated in his announcement: “I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my relatives and the nation first.”
Second, although he consented to abstain from using it, Andrew retains the dukedom, along with the titles his earldom and his barony and the esteemed position as a member of the Order of the Garter. Similar to the His Royal Highness title, they essentially become inactive.
He remains royalty and eighth in succession to the throne. Theoretically, he remains still a counsellor of state – and can stand in for the sovereign if he is overseas or unwell. However the palace has indicated that, in practice, he would not be asked to perform these duties.
Nonetheless, it is telling that Andrew’s statement indicated the decision was made “following talks with the monarch”. It appears little doubt that, behind the scenes, the palace advocated for the move in the hope of distancing the institution from Andrew.
Why Hasn’t He Been Officially Stripped of His Entire Honors?
To revoke a ducal title would take legislative action, and would constitute an unprecedented step in full view of the nation – it has not occurred to a senior royal in over a century – that it would likely cause more reputational damage for the royals.
The prince remains still a prince. At his birth in 1960, he was automatically such as the son of a monarch. This could only be altered if a royal decree was issued by the king.

While he said his sister had been “justified” by the decision, Giuffre’s brother Sky Roberts informed a newspaper that Andrew’s honorary prince title should be revoked for “genuine accountability” to be done.
The republican campaign group Republic has additionally stated the move is “too little, too late”, adding: “Andrew remains facing allegations of sexual offences and abuse of office. He should be divested of every honor and his navy rank and should face a criminal investigation. Refraining from using silly medieval titles is not a penalty that fits the offences.”
