As part of the transaction, Chicago must pay a transfer fee of $6,575,000 to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's NPB. The Swallows get a additional payment of 15% triggered salary escalators.
Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth Japanese-born to suit up for the Chicago franchise, joining reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu previously coached Murakami back in Japan.
On-Field Accomplishments
Murakami, a lefty bat who turns 26 on February 2nd, enters a promising core of hitters in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are finished with a last-place season, placing last in the AL Central but representing a notable improvement from the year before campaign.
The winner of back-to-back Most Valuable Player honors in consecutive seasons, Murakami is famous for a historic 2022 season where he belted 56 HRs, eclipsing the longstanding record for a NPB hitter formerly held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That year also made him the youngest player ever to win Japan's prestigious batting Triple Crown.
His last year was limited to just 56 appearances due to an oblique injury. Even with striking out 64 times, he batted .273 with 22 homers and 47 driven in.
Over his career tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has posted a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 homers, 647 RBI, and 977 strikeouts in nearly 900 games. Initially playing mostly at first, he has more recently played to third.
Global Stage Success
Murakami's heroics were on center stage during the last World Baseball Classic. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he hit a walk-off double that scored teammates for a thrilling 6-5 win. The very next day in the final against the Team USA, he hit a game-tying shot in the early innings, setting the stage for Japan's subsequent championship win.
The lefty slugger is scheduled to be unveiled at a introductory event on Monday.
