Powerful winter gusts brought walls down upon fragile tents sheltering Palestinians uprooted by war in Gaza, killing at least four people. This tragedy underscores the dangerous situation that persist after more than two years of intense bombardment and critical shortages of humanitarian assistance.

Truce Provides Little Respite from Harsh Elements

Although a truce has been active since October, humanitarian organizations report that Palestinians broadly lack the sufficient shelter required to withstand recurring winter storms.

Medical staff at Gaza City's largest medical facility, which received the bodies, said on Tuesday that the dead were two women, a young female, and a male adult.

In a separate incident, the Gaza health ministry announced on Tuesday that a 12-month-old infant died of hypothermia overnight.

"International actors has enabled us to witness death in every possible way," stated Bassel Hamouda after the burial. "It’s true the shelling may have paused for now, but we have seen every conceivable cause of death in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Relatives Crushed in Shelter Collapse

As per the medical center, 3 people of a single family — 72-year-old Mohamed Hamouda, his teenage granddaughter, and his daughter-in-law — were fatally injured when an eight-metre high wall fell onto their tent in a area near the sea of Gaza City. No fewer than 5 additional people were injured in the incident.

Family members on Tuesday began removing the debris that had buried their loved ones and reconstructing the tent shelters for those who remained.

Humanitarian Efforts and Ongoing Crisis

The UN and its aid organization allies were distributing tents, tarps, warm covers and clothes as well as nutrition and sanitation items throughout Gaza, stated the relevant UN coordination body.

The majority of the population reside in improvised shelters because their homes were turned into rubble during the war. Aid groups say an insufficient amount of building supplies are entering Gaza under the ceasefire.

Fatality Numbers Since the Truce

The Gaza health ministry, which is part of the administration, says over 440 individuals have been fatally shot by Israeli fire and their bodies brought to hospitals after the truce went into effect. The ministry keeps detailed casualty records that are considered generally reliable by international bodies and independent experts.

A spokesperson for UNICEF, representing the UN children's fund, said on that day that no fewer than one hundred minors under the age of 18 – 60 males and forty females – had been lost their lives after the ceasefire began because of military operations, such as drone strikes, airstrikes, artillery fire and employment of bullets. These numbers, he explained, represented cases where sufficient details had been compiled to justify documentation, but the overall count is believed to be higher. He noted that hundreds of children had been injured.

"Although 'bombings and gunfire have slowed' during the truce, they have not stopped," Elder told reporters at a UN briefing in the Swiss city by video from Gaza City. "Therefore what the international community now calls calm would be considered a catastrophe anywhere else," he concluded.

Another Cold Season of Hardship

Gaza’s residents of more than two million people has been struggling to keep the freezing temperatures and bad weather at bay while enduring lack of humanitarian aid and a lack of more substantial transitional shelter, which is urgently needed during the colder season. This marks the third cold season since the conflict between Israel and Hamas started on a date in late 2023, when fighters attacked southern Israel and killed approximately twelve hundred people and took hostage two hundred and fifty-one others into Gaza.

Gaza’s health ministry reports more than seventy-one thousand four hundred Palestinians have been killed in the subsequent retaliatory offensive.
